Nestled in the historic town of Dehua (birthplace of the exquisite Blanc de Chine), Luzerne’s Artist-in-Residence program offers a contemplative background for creators to hone their craft. The land on which this factory-hotel sits, is nurtured by the native clay in the region and populated by ancient kilns that tell profound stories past and present. Luzerne is delighted to open the doors of its imaginarium for artisans from all walks of life to partake in their creative endeavours.
Past Residents
Since its inception, the Luzerne Artist-in- Residence Program has welcomed a host of distinguished creators to perfect their skills with us.
Associate Professor Ng Woon Lam, a Singaporean artist and internationally acclaimed watercolourist, explores balance and harmony by blending the fluidity of Chinese ink with the depth and texture of Western watercolour. Having lived through Singapore’s journey, Professor Ng was a natural choice for Luzerne to capture the essence of the nation’s history through the hearts of its people.
Our first Artist-in-Residence, Singaporean Calvin Tay, who expertly captured the beauty in the worn and the mundane with his chef d’oeuvre during his stay at The Luzerne Hotel.
We have also welcomed Christine Laquet, a French visual artist who has graced numerous exhibitions with her artistic interpretation of relationships between society and nature. She possesses a unique ability to maintain the aesthetic and poetic essence of art, and has become a valuable asset in our residency program.
The goals we set for this programme are simple yet they touch the core of what we passionately believe in. With over 75 years of brand heritage, we are sharing this opportunity with creators to co- build their success stories with us. We also want to invest in creators who align with our ‘Made With Sustainable Efforts’ pledge and build a dynamic community where beneficiaries give back to the source. At the same time, we hope to develop and strengthen the spirit of ceramic art in Dehua, where artists enjoy next-to-origin convenience and the integration of the factory and hotel into the accommodation.
To maximize the benefits of your residency, we seek artists who clearly define their vision for their work. Preference will be given to those specializing in ceramic art or related disciplines. Artists who contribute a significant piece for display at the Luzerne Hotel will be particularly valued. We encourage incorporating elements of the hotel into your artwork for added recognition. Additionally, the number of pieces created relative to the residency duration will be considered. Please note that artists are responsible for arranging the transportation of their artwork after the residency.
